24H Emergency Call:

The 6 common diseases after summer holidays

Certain medical problems are common in autumn and occur after summer holidays. Sometimes these problems are purely psychosomatic, deriving from everyday life routine and the emotional stress that accompanies it.

Many times, however, these problems are due to pathogens that acted during the holidays and are manifested days or weeks after the return in our daily routine. According to medical studies, medical problems that occur up to six months from the return might be related to travel.

These factors are mainly related to poor hygiene or nutrition during breaks, unsteady sexual activity, contact with animals or insects, inadequate vaccination history and related exposure. Great role play the place of the trip, the type of trip (organized, camping etc.) and its duration.

Medical problems that concern us after holidays are:

Weakness

Bad eating habits during holidays, such as nutrition poor in vitamins and useful trace minerals, are particularly common. Upon return, the increased demands of everyday life when joining everyday intense family or work rhythms combined with a poor nutritional status results in prolonged fatigue and weakness.

At this stage, the levels of vitamins and trace elements after medical examination might be low and the need for strengthening the body with personalized nutrition programs or medications might be necessary.

Weight disorders

Personalized nutritional programs combined with certain pharmaceutical supplements and/or medication that are necessary in some cases, contribute to the restoration of organic excesses and help the body to recover metabolic balance.

Diarrhea

Post-travel diarrhea is usually owed to infectious causes that have occurred during travel, lactose intolerance, or bowel hypersensitivity syndrome. When symptoms are not restored quickly, do not respond to simple nutritional manipulations or are accompanied by serious events (fever, pressure drop, unbearable diarrhea, vomiting), medical evaluation is necessary.

Insomnia

The time variation, the change of environment, the return to the daily routine, the sudden change of habits, the increase of coffee consumption, are factors that adversely affect the sleep- wake cycle while returning to daily routine.

Particularly in the case of air travel between different zones poor sleep quality deteriorates and can persist for several weeks.

In the event of having a long-trip back home, avoiding losing sleep in the days before the trip, have a short sleep in the afternoon before the trip, have stability in waking hours, avoid alcohol abuse, toxic nutrition while special diet and medication if needed can help us to adapt to a new day-night cycle that occurs when changing habits and meridians.

Skin rashes

The skin rashes are very often after our return from holidays and may involve simple hypersensitivity reactions, insect bites or severe migration diseases and infections (e.g., mycobacterial infection, dermal kala-azar).

Fever

Causes of fever associated with travel are swine flu, hepatitis, bacterial enteritis, rickets, angio-infections, aids. The list is long and it is absolutely related to the place of travel and the history of vaccinations.

We must be aware that no modern anti-malarial medicine provides complete protection against malaria when traveling to endemic areas, some vaccinations (eg cholera, typhoid) quite protect while some infectious diseases may present fever weeks after initial infectious contact and return home (eg malaria, dengue, tuberculosis).
