ΗΡΩΔΕΙΟ Μ.ΘΕΟΔΩΡΑΚΗΣ CANTO GENERAL ΦΕΣΤΙ

What to do if you need a doctor as a tourist during your holiday in Greece.

Greece is one of the top tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. An estimated 25 million tourists will visit Greece in 2015 according to the Association Of Greek Tourist Enterprises (SETE).

There is a number of reasons why people enjoying their holiday bear a higher risk to be involved in emergency situations such as an acute illness or more complicated cases because of an injury caused by an accident.

Data among travelers during vacation show that injuries of any kind, minor or major comprise the leading cause for consulting a physician or for being hospitalized abroad.

Some reasons for this increased risk are:

1. Tourists during vacation are exposed to unfamiliar and perhaps risky environments
2. There are differences in language and communication
3. The so called vacation spirit leads to more risk taking behavior by the tourist

Other common causes that a tourist or en expatriate might need a doctor include:

1. Sunburns of any degree
2. Insect bites complicated by a superinfection of the surrounding skin
3. Allergies, Rashes
4. Gastroenteritis or food poisoning
5. Fever due to bacterial or viral infection
6. Cough due to a chronic or an acute respiratory disease
7. Symptoms from the urinary tract, pain under urination, presence of blood in the urine or inability to urinate
8. Pain in the abdomen
9. Pain in the chest
10. Dehydration due to long exposure to the sun resulting to sunstroke
11. Headache, dizziness, Vertigo
12. High blood pressure
13. High Blood Sugar ( hyperglycemia ) or Low Blood Sugar ( Hypoglycemia )
14. Acute alcohol intoxication
15. Minor trauma, cut wounds or sprains of the upper or lower extremities
16. Sore throat, difficulties in swallowing
17. Pain in the back
18. Earache due to ear wax or ear infection
19. Toothache or any other dental emergency
